Q: I want to apply for some controlled hunts this year. What is the deadline?

A: This answer is multi-faceted, depending on which species you are planning to hunt. The most urgent deadline is that for spring turkey and spring black bear. You must apply by February 15 to have a chance at one of those permits. The application period for controlled hunts for elk, deer, fall black bear and antelope is May 1 to May 31. If you are applying to hunt for trophy species (bighorn sheep, mountain goat, or moose) you must apply from April 1 to April 30. The application period for sandhill crane controlled hunts is June 15 to July 15. In cases when there are leftover tags, Fish and Game will conduct second drawings. The second drawing application period for trophy species is June 15 to 25. The second drawing application period for deer, elk, antelope and fall bear is August 5 to 15.
