Cunningham Falls State Park Hosts 35th Annual Maple Syrup Making Demonstration
THURMONT — Do you know how they make that wonderful maple syrup you use to drown your pancakes? The staff at Cunningham Falls State Park does and will be teaching Marylanders how it’s done at the 35th Annual Maple Syrup Making Demonstration, March 12, 13, 19 and 20 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the William Houck (Lake) Area.
Park Staff will demonstrate the process of making maple syrup, from tree tapping through boiling and packaging. Informative talks will explain the history and current status of one of America’s first agricultural products. There will also be activities and stories for children. A sign language interpreter will be available on March 13 and 20.
Musical entertainment will be provided by two local Bluegrass bands. “The Orchard Boys” will be playing on March 12 and 13 from 10:30 a.m. until 1 p.m., while the band “Hangfire” will be performing on March 19 and 20 from 10:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.
A $2 per person donation is requested to participate in the Maple Syrup Making Demonstration. Youth groups are asked to contribute $1 per person. Proceeds will benefit the Friends of Cunningham Falls and Gambrill State Parks.
In addition to the Demonstration, a Sausage and Pancake Breakfast will be served from 9:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. each day. Pancakes are $2.50 a plate, and $3.50 with sausage. Maryland made maple syrup and maple products will also be available for purchase from the Catoctin Mountain Tourist Council. Maple Syrup prices will reflect the current market price.
The Park reminds visitors to please leave all pets at home as they are prohibited in the William Houck Area of Cunningham Falls State Park. Please dress appropriately as most events are held outdoors.
Cunningham Falls State Park, William Houck Area is located west of Thurmont, MD. Take Rt. 77 west from Thurmont and turn left on to Catoctin Hollow Rd. Turn right into the park and follow the signs to the demonstration area. The park address is 14039 Catoctin Hollow Rd. Thurmont, MD 21788.
