Frankfort, KY (February 3, 2004) - Kentucky residents with qualifying disabilities are eligible to purchase a discounted license to hunt or fish in the Bluegrass State. Kentucky hunting and fishing licenses expire February 28, and new year licenses are required March 1 each year.Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources (KDFWR) laws provide that an individual who has an eligible disability and provides verification of that disability to the agency, be afforded the opportunity to purchase a discounted combination hunting and fishing license. The cost of this license is only $5. For those declared disabled through Social Security, the KDFWR requires that a TPQY form from your Social Security office be sent to the agency, along with your request for the disability license authorization card. The TPQY form must be sent to the fish and wildlife department by the hunter or angler, along with his or her address. No money should be sent to the agency. When verification is received that confirms an eligible disability, a green license purchasing authorization card is returned to the sender. Presenting this card to a hunting or fishing license vendor authorizes the purchase of the $5 disability license. The purchase authorization card must be shown to the salesperson in order to get the discounted license. Disability license authorization cards can be used for three years to buy the disability combination license. The card and the license must be in the hunter or angler’s possession when afield. After three years, the authorization card expires, and a new one must be obtained. The disability license includes a combination hunting and fishing license, the statewide deer permit, spring and fall turkey permits, state waterfowl permit and trout fishing permit. It is also the same license Kentucky residents 65 years old and older are eligible to purchase with verification of age and residency. Once a Kentucky resident reaches age 65, should he or she have qualified for a disability discounted license previously , it is no longer necessary to go through the disability verification process. He or she would qualify for the $5 Senior / Disability License because of age. Disabilities that qualify an individual to request a disability license authorization card include: Those who are declared totally and permanently disabled through the Federal Social Security Administration; a State Workers Compensation Board, U.S. Railroad Retirement Board, Kentucky Teacher Retirement System, or Kentucky resident employees of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management who are 100 percent disabled through a recognized authority. Veterans with a disability that is at least 50 percent service connected or military-related also qualify. Disabled veterans simply need a letter from the Veteran’s Administration verifying the 50 percent disability, and then send that letter to the KDFWR. For complete information about disability license qualifications, obtain a copy of the Kentucky Hunting Guide, or Sport Fishing and Boating Guide, available where licenses are sold. You may also go on line at fw.ky.gov and find licensing requirements. Requests for authorization cards and verifications of disability should be sent to: KDFWR Licensing Section, 1 Game Farm Road, Frankfort, KY 40601.
