GURDON
- The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission presented ownership of Big
Timber Lake (also known as Gurdon No. 2) in Clark County to the City of
Gurdon Monday, Jan. 31.
The City of Gurdon recently requested property rights to the lake for
use as a recreational area and an emergency water supply. It hopes to
renovate the pond through federal grant money.
"The acquisition of the lake was the first step in what could be a great
benefit to the city," said Gurdon Mayor Clayton Franklin.
David Goad, deputy director of the AGFC, said, "We're happy to fulfill
the request of the city. It's good to see everyone taking part in the
restoration of our natural resources."
State Representative Tommy Roebuck said, "The possibilities this lake
can bring the city and surrounding area are endless; we just need to
keep the ball rolling on its restoration."
The lake was one of
two ponds in Gurdon given to the AGFC by International Paper Company
years ago. The first lake was enhanced by the AGFC with easy access,
habitat improvements for fishing and a park-like setting. The second,
Big Timber Lake, was drained and has not been in use.
