North Shore forest management plan comment period extended (2005-02-01)

The public comment period has been extended through Feb. 18 for the draft forest resource management plan for state lands located in three landscape units in northeastern Minnesota (the North Shore Highlands, Toimi Uplands and Laurentian Upland subsections), according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources(DNR).

This phase of the North Shore area subsection forest resource management plan provides a strategic direction document that includes management direction, strategies and goals for vegetation management on 300,000 acres of state forest land administered by the DNR divisions of Forestry, Fish and Wildlife, and Trails and Waterways.

State forest lands comprise 12 percent of the land ownership in the three subsections. The strategic direction document includes both long-term management direction (50 or more years), such as how much of the various forest types are desired, and short-term plans (next 10 years), such as management strategies and proposed acres to be field visited, evaluated and treated (harvested, thinned, converted to other forest types, etc.).

The public has three options for reviewing the strategic direction document: View the document at www.dnr.state.mn.us request a 350-page paper copy of the plan, or request a CD-ROM copy of the plan.

Comments, questions or requests for a paper or CD-ROM copy of the plan can be submitted by e-mail to gaylord.paulson@dnr.state.mn.us by mail to Gaylord Paulson at DNR-Division of Forestry, 500 Lafayette Road, St. Paul, MN 55155-4044; by fax (651) 296-5954; or by phone at (651) 205-4571.
