North Shore forest management plan comment period extended (2005-02-01)
The public comment period has been extended through Feb. 18 for the draft
forest resource management plan for state lands located in three landscape
units in northeastern Minnesota (the North Shore Highlands, Toimi Uplands
and Laurentian Upland subsections), according to the Minnesota Department of
Natural Resources(DNR).
This phase of the North Shore area subsection forest resource management
plan provides a strategic direction document that includes management
direction, strategies and goals for vegetation management on 300,000 acres
of state forest land administered by the DNR divisions of Forestry, Fish and
Wildlife, and Trails and Waterways.
State forest lands comprise 12 percent of the land ownership in the three
subsections. The strategic direction document includes both long-term
management direction (50 or more years), such as how much of the various
forest types are desired, and short-term plans (next 10 years), such as
management strategies and proposed acres to be field visited, evaluated and
treated (harvested, thinned, converted to other forest types, etc.).
