FORT WALTON BEACH MAN CHARGED WITH FELONY DUMPING

January 27, 2005
CONTACT: FWC Officer Shelby Williams (850) 595-8978 ext. 523

A Fort Walton Beach man was arrested Tuesday after a witness reported he sank a derelict barge in Garnier’s Bayou on Choctawhatchee Bay.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) officers charged Ronald Parson, 44, 334 Kepner Drive with violation of Florida’s litter law for sinking the unwanted vessel. Officer Shelby Williams, who investigated the case, said dumping in an amount that exceeds 500 pounds is a third degree felony. The punishment can be up to a $5000 fine and five years imprisonment.

Williams said the witness reportedly watched Parson sink the barge one night by pumping water into it. After receiving the complaint, FWC officers dove on the site and photographed the barge before filing the charge against Parson.
