COMMISSION APPROVES FUNDING OF 15 WILDLIFE GRANT REQUESTS - Tom

Sidney, Neb. -- The Nebraska Game and Parks commissioners voted to approve
funding of 15 grant requests to the State Wildlife Grants Program at a
meeting January 20 in Sidney.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) allocated $702,000 to the
Commission through the State Wildlife Grants Program. Approximately one half
of the funds are being used to develop a comprehensive wildlife conservation
strategy that is required by Congress, and the remaining funds were made
available to conservation organizations through a competitive grants
program.
The Commission received 29 grant applications totaling $991,801. An advisory
committee recommended 15 of the projects for funding. The total amount
approved by the Commission to fund the projects was $338,529, pending FWS
approval.
The project sponsor, the amount of funding approved, and a brief description
of the project approved for funding, are:
-- Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory, $57,600 for grassland bird biology,
outreach and conservation;
-- The University of Nebraska-Lincoln, $72,882 for tern and plover
conservation partnership;
-- Platte River Whooping Crane Trust, $32,000 for a grassland bird research
project;
-- Oklahoma State University, $13,136 for examination of invasive plants in
the Rainwater Basin Region;
-- Sandhills Taskforce, $17,978 for grazing management partnership in the
Sandhills;
-- University of Nebraska-Panhandle RE&C, $19,633 for mixed-grass prairie
management in the Nebraska Panhandle;
-- Ducks Unlimited and National Wild Turkey Federation, $13,000 for
enhancing riparian habitat for wildlife;
-- Wayne State College, $2,870 for tallgrass prairie restoration at
Thompson- Barnes Wildlife Management Area;
-- University of Southern Arkansas, $16,930 for impacts of roadway networks
on Blandings turtles;
-- Nebraska Pheasants Forever, $20,000 for creation of early successional
stage grassland habitat;
-- University of Nebraska-Lincoln, $12,000 conservation genetics of the blue
sucker;
-- Crane Meadows Nature Center, $20,000 for Operation Bob-O-Link;
-- University of Nebraska-Kearney, $27,000 for competition between mosquito
fish and topminnow;
-- University of Nebraska-Lincoln, $6,000 for the scarabaeoid beetles of
Nebraska;
– Wachiska Audubon Chapter, $7,500 for Wachiska Audubon prairies maintenance
and monitoring.
