COMMISSION APPROVES 13 GRANTS FOR TRAIL CONSTRUCTION - Tom Keith
Sidney, Neb. -- The Nebraska Game and Parks Commissioners recently approved
eight grant applications for fiscal 2005 for funding under the Recreational
Trails Program and five grant applications for funding under the Trails
Development Assistance Act of 1991.
The Recreational Trails Program grant application requests and the amount of
funds approved were:
– a request by the City of Omaha for funds to construct a 3,250-foot-long,
10-foot- wide concrete trail along the west shore of Standing Bear Lake that
will connect to the existing south segment of the Standing Bear Lake Trail
and eventually the trail will make a loop around Standing Bear Lake,
$150,000;
– a request by the Lower Platte South NRD for funds to construct another
portion of the Homestead Trail, this part to be a 5-mile-long and
10-foot-wide limestone trail along the abandoned railroad between Princeton
and Cortland, $145,800;
– a request by the Village of Waterloo/Papio-Missouri River NRD for funds to
construct a public access point at Elkhorn River/Highway 64 that will allow
motorless watercraft users to use on the Elkhorn River, $135,210;
– a request by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for funds to construct two
bridges on East Campus between 33rd and 48th streets, along Huntington and
Leighton, $150,000;
– a request by the City of Lincoln for funds to renovate existing asphalt
trails into concrete trails within Tierra Park, to connect the Rock Island
Trail and the Williamsburg Trail, $54,300;
– a request by the City of Fairbury for funds to complete Phase II of the
Little Blue River project namely the construction of 2,640 feet of limestone
trail 8 feet wide, and a concrete ADA ramp that will connect to a bridge
funded last year, $81,664;
– a request by the City of Hebron for funds to construct a 2,654-foot-long,
8-foot- wide concrete trail from 4th and Euclid within the Ball Fields Park
near the Little Blue River and will end at the river, $147,231;
– a request by the City of South Sioux City for funds to construct a
4,800-foot-long, 10-foot-wide concrete trail as Phase II of the Sgt. Floyd
Underlook Trail, $55,795. Phase I was funded last year.
The five grant application requests approved under the Trails Development
Assistance Act of 1991 and the amounts approved are:
– a request by the City of Kearney for funds for Phase II of the E.K. and
Mary Yanney Heritage Park trail, $35,074.50;
– a request by the City of Ord for funds to construct a restroom facility on
Ord Trail, $38,440;
– a request by the City of Sutton for funds to construct an extension to the
School Creek Trail, $18,975;
– a request by the City of Ravenna for funds to construct a 5,634-foot
concrete trail with a bridge over the South Loup River, $20,000;
– a request by the City of Waterloo for funds to construct a canoe access
site on the Elkhorn River, $20,000.
