DNR schedules public meetings in Northwest Minnesota to discuss deer management (2005-01-18)

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will hold a series of public meetings in February to further discuss the results of this past October's survey of deer hunters in northwest Minnesota.

These meetings are the second phase of a project to gauge hunter support for regulations that may increase the proportion of antlered deer. Results of a survey of 300 northwest deer hunters, is available on the DNR Web site at www.dnr.state.mn.us.

In addition to the survey, DNR wildlife staff will present information about deer response to different harvest regulations.

"Attendance and input from the public are important components of setting direction for deer management in northwestern Minnesota," said Lou Cornicelli, DNR big game coordinator.

As a result of these meetings, the DNR hopes to develop deer management proposals that fully consider both biological needs (deer herd management) and social issues. The DNR will not propose specific changes at this meeting.

Each meeting will begin at 7 p.m.:

Thursday, Feb. 3: Roseau High School - Theater, Hwy 11, Roseau

Thursday, Feb. 3: Northland Community and Technical College - Auditorium - 2022 Central Avenue NE, East Grand Forks. Park on the north side of the college.

Friday, Feb. 4: Northland Community and Technical College - Theater, 1101 Highway One E, Thief River Falls

The format for these public meetings will be a 20-25 minute DNR presentation outlining the issues, followed by an opportunity for the public to give oral comments and fill out a survey.
