PINETOP, Ariz. - Since 1998, the Arizona Game and Fish
Department and five other agencies have been involved in the reintroduction
of the Mexican gray wolf to areas of Arizona and New Mexico where the
species once thrived. After several wolf releases, 50 to 60 of the animals
now live in the wild along the Arizona-New Mexico border.
Operating in an adaptive management approach, a core team representing the
involved agencies, called the Mexican Wolf Adaptive Management Oversight
Committee, has drafted 23 standard operating procedures to guide management
activities and decisions regarding the reintroduction project.
The committee is asking for interested parties to review the draft of the
standard operating procedures document and to provide written comment on it
by Jan. 31, 2005.
View the document.
Only written comments submitted via the Mexican wolf project's e-mail
address, mexwolf@azgfd.gov, will be
accepted.
The agencies cooperating in the wolf reintroduction project are the Arizona
Game and Fish Department, New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, U.S. Fish
and Wildlife Service, U.S. Forest Service, USDA Wildlife Services, and White
Mountain Apache Tribe.
