Jan. 27 is new date for final Wild River State Park Citizen Advisory Committee meeting (2005-01-12)

Park boundaries, conservation issues and viewshed protection are among the topics to be discussed at the final meeting of the Citizens Advisory Committee to be held 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 27, at the Wild River State Park Trail Center. The public is invited to attend this meeting as the committee finalizes its work on a new management plan for Wild River State Park.

The Citizens Advisory Committee has been working this past year with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Division of Parks and Recreation to develop the plan that will set the park's direction and management objectives for the next 20 years. The plan is scheduled for completion this spring.

The meeting provides an opportunity for the public to offer input, ask questions and get more information about basic issues addressed in the management plan for Wild River State Park. One of the topics included in all state park plans is the statutory boundary of the park. Since this will be one of the topics for discussion at the January meeting, local landowners will have the opportunity to ask questions and get more information about the potential for including their property in the park's statutory boundaries.

Wild River State Park is located along 18 miles of the St. Croix River in Chisago County. The park was established in 1973 to protect the natural and cultural resources and to provide recreational opportunities along the river. The park's name, "Wild River," comes from the designation of the St. Croix River as a "Wild and Scenic River," one of the original eight rivers protected by the U.S. Congress through the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 1968. Nearly 5,000 of the park's total 6,803 acres were donated by Northern States Power Company (now Excel Energy).

Today the park offers recreational opportunities to people who enjoy camping, hiking, horseback riding, canoeing, interpretive programs, self-guided trails, and cross-country skiing.

For more information or directions to the meeting, please contact Park Planner Nancy Albrecht at (651) 284-0263 or nancy.albrecht@dnr.state.mn.us, or Park Manager Shawn Donais at (651) 583-2125 or shawn.donais@dnr.state.mn.us.
