Hunts Go On

Hunters have a few more reasons in this new year to keep guns and dogs ready to go than they had in 2004.

In western Idaho where most of the bird population lives, quail season continues though January 31. Quail hunting closed at the end of the year in the rest of the state.

Chukar and gray partridge hunting also stays open through January in Area 1, the western part of Idaho, and through January 15 in Area 2, consisting of parts of Lemhi and Custer Counties.

Hunters should consult the current Upland Game Seasons & Rules booklet for boundaries and other details.

Bird hunters have enjoyed high numbers of upland game birds, particularly chukar, this season.

Hunting for forest grouse and pheasant ended December 31.

Cottontail rabbits can be hunted statewide through February 28 and snowshoe hares may be taken through March 31.

Waterfowl hunting continues into January with season closings depending on species and areas. Hunters should consult the current Waterfowl Seasons & Rules booklet closely. Pintail and canvasback duck seasons are closed.

Waterfowl hunters also need a new federal migratory bird harvest information validation. The federal waterfowl hunting stamp remains in effect through the end of June, and also allows free entry into U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service fee areas.

Most mountain lion seasons run through March 31 except in north Idaho where there are a variety of closing dates. Some units retain a quota on the number of females to be taken and close when that quota is met. Hunters need to compare rules with areas they intend to hunt and check with regional Fish and Game offices on closures where quotas apply. Hunters using hounds need a valid permit as well as a hunting license and tag.

A 2005 license is required for all hunting including hunting for species such as coyotes that may be taken year round.
