This fishing report has been generated from the best information available
from officers and anglers.
Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, however, as
stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.
NORTHEAST AREA
COCHITI LAKE There was no fishing pressure on the lake this past week.
CONCHAS LAKE Fishing was slow for all species with very light fishing
pressure again this past week.
EAGLE NEST LAKE Ice fishing for perch was good again this past week. Anglers
were using jigs, worms, power bait and wax worms. A few good size rainbows
and kokanee were also taken. The ice was reported as 10-to-12 inches thick
around the shore line but there is thin ice and some open water toward the
middle of the lake. Anglers are advised to use extreme caution.
LAKE MALOYA/ LAKE ALICE Lake Alice now has about nine inches of ice and
fishing was good this past week for anglers using ice jigs and home made
dough bait for
rainbow trout up to 15 inches. Lake Maloya has four-to-five inches of ice
and anglers are doing well using the same baits but for smaller fish.
PECOS RIVER Water flow near the town of Pecos on Monday morning was 39cfs.
Trout fishing was rated as fair this past week in the Villanueva area. Most
of the trout were taken on salmon eggs and spinners.
RED RIVER Fishing is slow with very little fishing pressure.
RIO GRANDE Water flow near the Taos Junction Bridge was 488cfs. Fishing was
slow with a few browns and rainbows taken on salmon eggs, wet flies and
worms.
STORRIE LAKE There is a thin layer of ice on the lake and anglers should
call the state park office at 505-425-7278 for updated ice conditions.
UTE LAKE The Ute Lake marina has closed temporarily but the boat ramps are
open and in good condition. There were no reports from anglers again this
week.
NORTHWEST AREA
ALBUQUERQUE AREA DRAINS Trout fishing continued to be quite good this
past week on all drains. Anglers did well using corn, salmon eggs, power
bait, wax worms and small wet and dry flies.
ABIQUIU LAKE Fishing was slow with very light pressure.
BLUEWATER LAKE Thin ice has developed around the edges of the lake with a
few open water areas. Bank fishing was good using salmon eggs and corn for
8-to-10 inch trout. Call the park office at 1-505-876-2391 for updated ice
conditions.
CHAMA RIVER Water flow below El Vado Lake on Monday morning was 103cfs and
82cfs below Abiquiu. Fishing was slow.
EL VADO LAKE There were no reports from anglers this week.
FENTON LAKE The ice is 10-to-12 inches thick in most areas. Fishing was
reported as slow-to-fair this past week by anglers using salmon eggs, ice
jigs and corn.
HERON LAKE Bank fishing near the La Laja boat ramp was fair using corn and
salmon eggs for rainbow trout up to 14 inches.
FARMINGTON LAKE There were no reports from anglers this week.
JACKSON LAKE There were no reports from anglers this week.
JEMEZ RIVER Flow on the river near Jemez Springs on Monday was 38cfs.
Anglers reported fair trout fishing on the lower river. Best baits were
copper john barrs, salmon eggs and wax worms.
NAVAJO LAKE No anglers on the lake this past week.
SAN JUAN Water flow below Navajo Dam on Monday morning was 248cfs and
fishing continued to be quite good for both fly and bait anglers. Best flies
were chocolate emergers, small pheasant tails, sparkle worms, red annelids,
egg patterns, parachute adams, wooly buggers and copper john barrs. Anglers
in the bait waters also caught fish on salmon eggs, garlic cheese, power
bait, jerk baits and worms.
SOUTHWEST AREA
BEAR CANYON No reports from anglers this week.
BILL EVANS LAKES Trout fishing was fair using corn, power bait and salmon
eggs.
CABALLO LAKE Fishing was slow with very light fishing pressure on the lake.
ELEPHANT BUTTE White bass and stripers were the only fish reported taken
this past week. Most of the stripers were taken on umbrella rigs trolled at
depths of 12-to-20 feet along the edge of the main channel. Anglers trolling
for stripers also caught some good size white bass. More white bass were
taken on slab spoons worked at depths of 20-to-40 feet.
ESCONDIDA LAKE Fishing was slow.
GLENWOOD POND No reports from anglers but fishing should be good as several
rainbows have been stocked.
LAKE ROBERTS There were no reports from anglers this week.
PERCHA DAM Fishing was slow for all species.
QUEMADO LAKE There is thin ice on the lake which is unsafe for fishing at
this time.
RIO GRANDE Water flow below Elephant Butte was 7.2cfs as of Monday. Fishing
was slow for all species.
SOUTHEAST AREA
BATAAN LAKE Fishing was good using power bait and salmon eggs for trout.
BOSQUE REDONDO Fishing was fair using prop flies, salmon eggs and power bait
for trout.
BOTTOMLESS LAKES Fishing was good using power bait for trout. Cottonwood
Lake continues to see the most fishing activity.
BRANTLEY Fishing was slow for all species. The main road into the park is
closed for construction but there is detour access to the park.
CARLSBAD MUNICPAL LAKE Fishing was fair-to-good using salmon eggs and
spinners for
trout.
GRINDSTONE The lake is open to bank fishing but there were no reports this
week.
LAKE VAN Fishing was fair using power bait and salmon eggs for trout.
PECOS Below Sumner Lake, fishing was fair using salmon eggs for stocked
trout.
PERCH LAKE There were no reports from anglers this week.
RUIDOSO RIVER Water flow was 43cfs and the river was quite murky. Fishing
was slow.
SANTA ROSA LAKE Fishing was slow for all species.
SUMNER LAKE There were no anglers on the lake this past week.
STOCKING REPORT:
Crews stocked 3,013 rainbow trout averaging 10.6 inches in length in the
following waters: BATAAN LAKE, BLACK RIVER, CARLSBAD MUNICIPAL LAKE &
GLENWOOD POND.WINTER FISHING TIPS
The right tools can make that ice fishing experience a little more
enjoyable. They include a good ice auger, a strainer for keeping the hole
free of ice, and a portable fish finder.
