Indiana Department of Natural Resources For immediate release: January 4, 2005 Make Memorial Day and July 4th Camping Reservations Early; Don't get left out in the cold. More than 1,275 DNR campsites already have been reserved for Memorial Day weekend. And savvy campers know that now is the best time to plan your Memorial Day or July 4 celebration at an Indiana state park, reservoir or state recreation area. DNR campsites sell out early for both holidays. July 4 will sell out even earlier this year because the holiday is on a Monday. Reservations for the 8,000 state park and reservoir campsites can be made on the Internet at www.camp.IN.gov or by phoning toll free at 866-6CAMPIN [866-622-6746]. The Internet site is available 24/7. The operating hours for the toll-free number are noon to 8 p.m. EST Monday-Friday, and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday. Campsites for the July 4 holiday also are available for reservation online and at the toll free number. Noteworthy for the 2005 camping season: * 2005 is the first camping season at Prophetstown State Park near Lafayette. There are 55 full hook-up and 55 electric campsites available. * The completion of repairs on the dam at Mississinewa Lake in north central Indiana will allow the water level to increase to its normal summer pool, which means more boating, swimming and sunbathing on beaches. * Indiana's newest state park, O'Bannon Woods, is open in scenic Harrison and Crawford counties with one of the state's best campgrounds, 100 miles of recreational trails, historic Wyandotte Caves and some of Indiana's best canoeing. * At Indiana Dunes a brand new campground will open this summer. Keep checking the DNR home page at www.dnr.IN.gov for the grand opening announcement. Campsite pricing again will be divided into weekend/holiday and weekday rates for 2005. There also will be discount pricing on Indiana's Seven Jewels. This means additional discounts for camping at Charlestown, Harmonie and O'Bannon Woods State Parks as well as Mississinewa and Lieber Reservoirs and Deam Lake and Starve Hollow State Recreation Areas. Reservations for state park inns, family cabins, shelters, recreation buildings and group camps already are available at online at www.indianainns.com or toll free at 1-877-lodges1. Ask about the winter discount -- two consecutive nights for the price of one (Sunday through Thursday) -- at the inns until March 10, 2005. To make a reservation using this special rate you must call the toll-free operator at 877-lodges1. -30- News reporter contact: Becky Weber, 317-232-0041
