YOUTH HUNTERS CAN WIN A FREE GUIDED TURKEY HUNT
KWF announces first annual youth essay contest

LAWRENCE — The Kansas Wildlife Federation (KWF), a statewide organization of hunters and anglers, is calling for essays from youth hunters who want to share their pride in the Kansas outdoors. Youth ages 12 through 15 who live in Kansas are invited to submit essays for KWF's essay contest on the theme of “Why I'm Proud to Hunt.” The winner will receive a free guided hunt from Paradise Adventures, Altoona, during the 2005 youth turkey season. KWF will reimburse the family for mileage needed to drive to Altoona.

“These days, there are so many things for kids to do,” says Dan Ward, KWF's executive director. “A lot of them keep kids indoors, so it's important for the kids who hunt to share that tradition with their peers.”

“We want kids to be proud of hunting and proud of their outdoor traditions,” says KWF Conservation Vice President Lori Hall. “Hunting is among the proudest of these traditions, and we want to keep it alive and well in Kansas.”

The contest is an opportunity for young hunters to share their thoughts on the value of hunting with their classmates and with other kids across Kansas. The winning essay will be published in KWF's newsletter and on its website, and it will be sent to newspapers throughout the state.

“There are all kinds of essays KWF is looking for," says Hall. "What makes you look forward to a hunting season? What would you want to tell kids who don't hunt? How do you feel about the role hunters play in preserving the outdoors?”

Essays will be judged for spelling, grammar, clarity, and effectiveness of writing. Entries are due by Jan. 28, 2005, and the winner will be announced at KWF's annual meeting, scheduled for Feb. 11 and 12, 2005, in Manhattan.

Those who want to enter should contact Ward at the KWF Topeka office, 214 SW 6th, Suite 205 Topeka, KS 66603, or email info@kswildlife.org. For questions or further information, phone 785-232-3238.
