Division of Fish and Wildlife Offers Training for
Volunteer Instructors for 'Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs'
For more information, contact Trina Cale-Rosario at 653-2882, ext. 104.
The Division of Fish and Wildlife will hold a “Hooked on Fishing, Not on
Drugs” workshop for volunteer instructors from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday,
Dec. 4 at Fort Delaware State Park’s Grass Dale Center.
Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs is an innovative approach to drug prevention
that provides a fun, lifelong alternative to drugs and other harmful
behaviors that children face. It is offered through the American
Sportfishing Association’s Future Fisherman Foundation in more than 30
states. This is Delaware’s third year to offer the program. To date 22
instructors have been trained.
Anyone interested in becoming certified as an instructor for this national
program still has time to register with Trina Cale-Rosario, the Division’s
volunteer coordinator, at 302-653-2882, ext. 104 or 302-632-6425.
“This program is becoming a big success in Delaware as more instructors are
reaching out to the state’s youth,” according to Delaware’s Hooked on
Fishing, Not on Drugs coordinator Bob Jones.
“Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs combines aquatic education instruction and
healthy life skills that promote positive personal development,” Jones said.
“It emphasizes the importance of relationships between responsible adults
and youths and provides opportunities for concerned citizens to become
involved with students.”
Participants learn about watersheds, fishing techniques, freshwater ecology,
food webs, and local environmental issues. Emphasis is given to safety,
angler ethics, knot tying, casting, catch and release, and fish
identification. All activities are designed to increase the enjoyment and
knowledge of Delaware’s aquatic resources.
