NON-RESIDENT BIG GAME LICENSE TO COST LESS IN 2005

New non-resident license fees reflect slight reduction in federal consumer price index.

Non-resident hunters will pay $5 less for deer and bull elk licenses to reflect a slight reduction in the federal consumer price index for the Denver-Boulder area.

Out-of-state hunters will now pay $485 for a bull or either-sex elk licenses and $290 for a deer license. Cow elk licenses will continue to cost non-residents $250.

The price of non-resident deer and elk licenses is adjusted annually under a state statute approved by the Colorado Legislature in 2001. The price typically increases slightly, but 2005 will be the first year that the price has declined.

Residents will continue to pay $30 for an elk license and $20 to hunt deer. The price of a resident license has not increased since 1992.

The sale of deer and elk licenses provides more than half of the operating budget for the Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW). The DOW receives no state tax money and depends on hunting and fishing licenses, a federal excise tax on hunting and fishing related equipment, Colorado Lottery proceeds, and donations for nearly all its revenue.
