COLUMBUS, OH - Fall waterfowl hunters are reminded to practice safe
boating while hunting on the waters, according to the Ohio
Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). Waterfowl hunting season
opens Saturday, October 16 in northern Ohio and on Saturday, October
23 elsewhere in state.
“Waterfowl hunters using their boats need
to be mindful of staying safe when on the water,” said Ken Alvey,
chief of the ODNR Division of Watercraft. “This is especially
important as the season moves into the colder months when water
temperatures can be dangerously low.”
Planning for cold weather and water conditions is essential
anytime boating activity is done during the fall and winter months.
Most of the state will not see waterfowl seasons close until January
30.
Being prepared for boating as well as waterfowl hunting
conditions begins with wearing the proper clothing that will offer
adequate protection against cold weather and cold-water
temperatures. In addition, boaters are encouraged to wear a life
jacket or other type of personal flotation device.
Wearing a few light layers of synthetic or wool clothing under a
waterproof shell is highly recommended to help prevent hypothermia
should a water immersion occur. Thin insulating materials, warm
fleeces, polypropylene are good to ward of the chills.
Other safety tips to keep in mind this waterfowl season, include:
 | Make sure boats are properly loaded and balanced
before leaving the shoreline. |
 | Stay within the posted weight capacity limits and
do not overload your boat with passengers and gear. |
 | Stay seated or kneel when shooting from a boat.
Never stand up in a boat. |
 | Toss waterfowl decoys from the boat when preparing
to hunt and use a pole and hook to safely retrieve decoys from the
water. |
 | Keep in mind that some inland lake levels are
being drawn down to their winter pool depth, leaving water levels
several feet below normal. |
 | File a float plan with someone who can act
responsibly should problems arise. |
 | Be prepared for an emergency and carry a
communications device such as a portable cell phone, or two-way
radio. Be able to render assistance to others should an emergency
occur. |
 | Avoid consumption of alcoholic beverages. |
 | Know the day’s weather forecast and stay alert to
changing weather conditions. |
