another sturgeon poached

The remains of a large white sturgeon were found and reported to Fish and Game late last week. A $250 reward has been offered by Citizens Against Poaching (CAP) for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for the poaching. Call the CAP hotline toll-free at 800-632-5999.

This poaching incident follows on the heels of a nine-foot sturgeon poached from the Snake River in April.

The carcass of the seven-foot sturgeon, including the head, backbone, tail and entrails was found wrapped in a olive-drab tarp near the Bennett Road exit off of Interstate 84 east of Mountain Home on Saturday, June 4. Fish and Game conservation officer Bob Sellers estimated that the fish, thought to be more than 30 years old, was dumped late Friday evening or early Saturday morning.

While additional evidence was collected at the scene, Sellers is very interested in talking with anyone who might have information to help the case along. "Somebody suddenly has a lot of fresh sturgeon meat," Sellers said. "I'm hopeful that someone else with a conscience will give us a call on this case."

Sturgeon are long-lived, slow growing fish. Although sturgeon fishing is allowed on the Snake River, a catch and release rule applies with anglers required to use barbless hooks and release the fish without removing them from the water.
