Youth turkey hunt returns for third season
HEBER
SPRINGS - Providing turkey hunting opportunities for Arkansas’ youths is the
idea behind what has become an annual event in the state. Fifteen lucky
Arkansas youths will get a chance to hunt turkey in the Heber Springs area
Mar. 27-28.
“This event will be both educational and fun,” said Sam Lester of the
Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. “These young people will work with local
guides to learn about turkey hunting and gun safety,” Lester added.
The AGFC is teaming up with the National Wild Turkey Federation and
Lindsay’s Rainbow Resort for this unique youth hunting opportunity. Kids
will be selected for the hunt by submitting a 200-word essay titled “Outdoor
Memories.” Youths must be between the ages of 12 and 15 as well as hunter
education graduates. Those chosen to take part in the turkey hunt will
receive camouflage clothing and a turkey vest provided by Mack’s Prairie
Wings of Stuttgart and turkey calls from Hooks Custom Calls of Batesville.
To submit an essay for the contest, mail the composition to Sam Lester, HC
72 Box 309 H, Jasper, Ark. 72641.Be sure to include name, address, age and
telephone number with the essay. Deadline is Mar. 20. For more information
contact Sam Lester at 870-446-5895.
“In addition to the educational experience for the youth participants, this
is a great opportunity to showcase Arkansas’ wildlife resources,” Lester
explained.
The youth turkey hunt is sponsored by the AGFC along with the help of local
guides and landowners.
