Snowmobile riders are at the most risk to be caught and killed in avalanches, and the number of fatal snowmobile accidents is on the rise.

"The past two years have been tragic for the snowmobile riding community with a combined loss of 18 riders," said Ray Paige, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks' trails program specialist. Thirteen of the fatalities occurred as the result of avalanches.

"These tragedies occurred for a variety of reasons, but they have made everyone stop and think about snowmobile safety,” Paige said.  "Everyone in the snowmobile riding community needs to make safety a high priority.”

Paige recommended these tips for snowmobile riders.

*Keep your machine well maintained and serviced regularly

*Always check local weather conditions

*Avoid riding in areas prone to avalanches

*Always dress appropriately and bring adequate survival supplies

*Slow down when night riding

*Respect private property

*Cross roads with care

*Avoid riding alone
