Hunters Encouraged to Showcase Their Skills and Compete at Expo
CASPER – Young hunters are encouraged to showcase their skill at the fourth
annual Wyoming Youth Hunter Education Challenge Saturday, Sept. 6 at the
Hunting and Fishing Heritage Expo in Casper.
This competition for young hunters 12 to 18 years old consists of .22 rifle
and shotgun marksmanship, written and hands-on tests of firearms safety and
wildlife identification. The challenge begins at 9 a.m. at the Stuckenhoff
Shooting Complex.
“This is a great opportunity for a youngster to display their hunting
knowledge and skill, while learning more about the pastime and meet other
young hunters,” said Jake Hohl, challenge coordinator.
Like all other Expo activities, the challenge is free. Firearms, including
youth and adult model .22 rifles and 12 and 20 gauge shotguns, and ammo are
provided. Youngsters can also bring their own open-sight rifle or shotgun.
Winners in each of the two age groups – 12-14, 15-18 -- receives a limited
edition wildlife print and plaque. Winners also get tickets to the Expo
banquet where they will be personally recognized. All contestants receive a
souvenir of the challenge.
Contestants should show up at the shooting complex at 9 a.m. to register. No
contestant will be allowed to start the challenge after 9:45 a.m. To reach
the complex take the Bryan Stock Trail exit north off I-25 and look for the
shooting range sign to turn east before reaching top of first hill.
The event is patterned from a similar competition conducted by the National
Rifle Association.
Contact Jake Hohl or Jeff Obrecht at (888) EXPO-WYO for more information
about the youth hunter challenge.
The challenge is just one of many Expo activities for youngsters. The first
day of the Sept. 5-7 event is designed for school kids. Last year 7,000
youngsters from across Wyoming attended kids day to shoot rifles, .22s,
canoe, fly cast and other activities. Over 20,000 outdoor enthusiasts
attended over the three days.
