2003 DAVID CROCKETT DAYS
August 16-17
LIMESTONE,
Tenn. -- It's time to gather the camping gear and head Davy Crockett
Birthplace State Park in Limestone for Crockett Days. This two day
celebration of the birth of David Crockett, an American hero and one of
Tennessee's famous sons, is taking place in the pioneer camp August 16-17.
Events are planned throughout the weekend for all ages
interested in the history of our state. Activities include a living history
"Pioneer Camp," crafts, bluegrass music, story telling and games. Plenty of
refreshments will be available.
A special addition to this year's celebration is the
Crockett Rifle, currently on display at the East Tennessee Historical
Society's museum in Knoxville, Tenn. The rifle will be accompanied by museum
staff and the rifle's current owner, Mr. Joseph Swann, a direct descendant
of the man Crockett sold the flintlock rifle to while living in East
Tennessee. The rifle will be on display from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday,
August 16 only.
Also on hand for the celebration will be Manley Cobia,
author of the recently published "Journey into the Land of Trials." Cobia
will be signing his book, which is a definitive chronicle of the final days
of Davy Crockett's life, his journey from Tennessee to Texas, the Alamo and
ultimately, his place in history.
