West Virginia State WildlifeCenter Enjoys A Successful 80th Anniversary Celebration

Well over 800 visitors took part in the West Virginia State Wildlife Center’s 80th Anniversary celebration, held on June 20, 2003, according to Rob Silvester, Wildlife Center Biologist.  The event included a free admission day and refreshments for visitors, a kids’ fishing derby at the trout pond and a reception for current and former employees of the Wildlife Center.  “Everyone had a wonderful time. One of the most memorable experiences was listening to the stories and tales of former employees who worked at the Center,” said Silvester.

Located in Upshur County, the Wildlife Center was established in 1923 as a wildlife refuge to aid in the reestablishment of wildlife populations in the state.  Its value as a tourist attraction was quickly realized as many visitors came to the Wildlife Center in its first years of operation.  Since that time, more than 4-million visitors have walked the interpretative trail exploring their natural world and learning more about the state’s wildlife resources.

“Funding for the Wildlife Center is derived from admission fees, donations and miscellaneous revenues generated by the Wildlife Resources Section.  Having this event was the Wildlife Resources Section’s way of saying ‘thank you’ to our generous patrons,” said Silvester.

For more information about the Wildlife Center, contact the West Virginia State Wildlife Center at P.O. Box 38, French Creek, WV  26218, phone: (304) 924-6211 or visit the DNR’s web page at www.dnr.state.wv.us .
