WATERBURY, VT - Here's a chance to help contribute to fisheries conservation efforts in Vermont. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department are asking for volunteer help with the stocking of landlocked Atlantic salmon fry into the Huntington River on Saturday, May 24.  The inch-long salmon fry will be scatter-stocked into shallow areas where they will grow for two to three years before migrating out to Lake Champlain to mature and eventually return to the rivers as adults.

Angler Larry Poole, Jr. of Martinez (Columbia County) had more than just a great day of fishing on the Savannah River on February 24, 2008 - he managed to catch a fish that tied an existing state record! Poole reeled in a 2 lbs. 8 oz., 17-inch yellow perch, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division (WRD). This ties the state record caught in Lake Burton in 1980.

“The Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division (WFF) has reported fishing tournament results from participating bass clubs in the Bass Angler Information Team (BAIT) Report for 22 years,” said Biologist Damon Abernethy. “The year 2007 was one of the best bass fishing years since the program began in 1986 despite the record drought that did not appear to have a negative impact on bass fishing in Alabama’s reservoirs.”

The camp to be held Aug. 3-8 is open to Wyoming residents and is located at the Whiskey Mountain Conservation Camp near Dubois.  Enrollment is limited to 50 youth and the application deadline to apply is May 31, 2008.  There is no charge, but participants are required to make their own transportation arrangements and to provide a sleeping bag and their own personal gear. Tyler State Park Lake sent its second Budweiser ShareLunker and a new lake record to Athens Monday. The 14.5-pound largemouth bass took a rainbow-trout imitating swim bait being worked in 3 feet of water by Tyler angler Brett Harris. The fish was 27.75 inches long and 20.25 inches in girth. Largemouth bass were stocked into the 64-acre lake in 1975, 1985 and 1990.

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) is planning to move 36 elk from U.S. Forest Service’s Land Between the Lakes (LBL) in Kentucky to the Royal Blue Wildlife Management Area in Campbell County Tennessee on Saturday, March 8, 2008.  At approximately 10:00 a.m. (Eastern Time) on Saturday morning, the elk will be released on Royal Blue, which is part of Tennessee’s 670,000 acre Elk Restoration Zone.  The release location will be on Massengale Mountain where the first elk were released in 2000.

A group of state, federal and nonprofit entities is exploring a possible link between the 114-mile George S. bullet IDNR Addresses Recent Internet Rumors of Cougars in Illinois; Photos Being Circulated Claiming To Be Taken In Illinois Are Actually From Wyoming
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) is addressing recent internet rumors claiming photographic evidence of cougars in Illinois. These photos are being falsely identified as being taken in Illinois – in many cases claiming to be taken near Findlay in Shelby County. The photos are real, but appear to have been taken in 2001 or 2002 in Lander, Wyoming where cougars are common. The internet rumors have been circulating throughout Illinois via email and usually misidentify the location of the photos.

Lake Erie anglers should enjoy another year of exceptional fishing in 2008, according to biologists with the ODNR Division of Wildlife. "Lake Erie remains one of the greatest natural resources in our country," said Roger Knight, Lake Erie fisheries program manager at ODNR. "Where else but Lake Erie can an angler find such diversity of fish species and sizes? We anticipate excellent fishing opportunities once again this year for walleye and yellow perch, as well as strong fisheries for other species like smallmouth bass, white bass and steelhead."

Although ice fishing ranks as the most unpredictable period of the year, angler numbers and angler success have remained high at the lake throughout the winter.  "People were able to get out on good ice early in the season, and they immediately began to find good numbers of walleyes and yellow bass," says Fjeld, official DNR Creel Clerk for Clear Lake. bullet COMMISSION TAKES ACTION ON BASS FISHING TOURNAMENTS
After seeking public input, the Commission passed the prohibition of bass fishing tournaments on the West Branch, North Branch and main stem of the Susquehanna River that permit the killing of black bass. This prohibition was generated in response to angler concerns about organized events that focus on taking black bass, especially at a time when agency biologists and bass fishermen have concerns about the relatively weak reproduction of young smallmouth bass in parts of the river system in recent years. The amendment does not apply to tournament harvest of species other than black bass.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Fisheries Service today presented the estimated 2007 blue crab harvest numbers from Maryland’s portion of the Chesapeake Bay. The estimated 2007 harvest is 21.8 million pounds, approximately 6 million pounds below last year’s harvest and slightly above Maryland’s lowest recorded harvest of 20.2 million pounds in 2000.

Every January since 2001, teachers and students at approximately 50 Clark County schools eagerly set up 10-gallon aquariums that will serve as table-top hatcheries for rainbow trout. The schools are part of the Trout in the Classroom program sponsored by the Nevada Department of Wildlife. Participating schools receive about 200 trout eggs each year and students have the opportunity to see them hatch and then raise the fish right in the classroom.

Winter is fire season in Missouri, and foresters are warning of increased risk to rural homes and businesses. They say property owners can reduce fire risk created by last year’s ice storms. bullet Cumberland River Receives Extra Trout to Boost Populations Affected By Water Quality Problems
While last summer’s low water flows into the Cumberland River tailwater made it a fishing paradise for wading anglers, the higher temperatures that resulted downriver created stressful conditions for trout. To help boost the trout populations in the lower section of the river, the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources will stock 21,000 brown trout into the tailwater this week. The bonus stocking is in addition to the 38,000 brown trout normally stocked in March.

bullet Lake Davis Once Again Open To Anglers
Last month, DFG planted more than 31,000 Eagle Lake trout from its American River Hatchery, ranging in size from one-half pound to more than three pounds, into Lake Davis. Additional plantings of nearly 1 million trout are planned later this year. The daily bag limit for trout on Lake Davis in Plumas County is five per day with 10 in possession.

Indiana State Parks and Reservoirs is sponsoring two new Winter Fun contests, one for adults and one for kids.  Kids under the age of 18 are asked to submit a photo of themselves doing their favorite winter activity at one of the state parks or reservoirs, plus a few sentences about that favorite pursuit.  Adults are asked to submit, in 250 words or fewer, a description of a winter tradition that their family enjoys at a state park or reservoir.

Thirteen-year-old C.J. Nowling, of Jay, Fla., took his first buck Jan. 3, while hunting with his grandfather in Santa Rosa County – or did he? What the boy and his grandfather didn’t realize – until they were cleaning it – was the 6-point buck was actually an antlered doe. "In most of these cases, what we find is that the deer has a combination of both male and female internal sex organs, and the external sex organs are usually underdeveloped and not well defined," FWC biologist and Deer Management Program leader Dr. Robert Vanderhoof said.

bullet ODFW relocates part of I-84 herd to continue bighorn sheep recovery in Oregon
Wildlife biologists and veterinarians from ODFW successfully captured 29 bighorn sheep from an area near Rufus and relocated the animals to Baker and Malheur counties. “The I-84 herd is outgrowing the habitat available,” explained Steve Cherry, ODFW district wildlife biologist in Heppner. “We are moving them to new areas of the state so we can continue restoring bighorn sheep to Oregon.”...

CO Matt Frericks (Virginia) took a call from a young hunter who was confronted by another, who said the young hunter was in a deer stand that he had built. The hunter replied that since the stand was on public land, anybody could use it. The other hunter left, came back with a chainsaw, and advised the hunter to get out of the stand or he would cut the stand down. The hunter got down and the stand was cut down shortly thereafter. Enforcement action was taken on the hunter who thought he “owned” the stand.....

Deer hunters have harvested over 2,000 deer on either-sex managed deer hunts on state owned Wildlife Management Areas (WMA) through Dec. 3. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife Fisheries (LDWF) has reported that a total of 21,224 hunter efforts were recorded on these managed hunts.
